The Creative Works of Theo McInnes

Theo Mcinnes is a London based photojournalist with a wide breadth of work, ranging from portraiture, to documentary and event oriented coverage. There’s a constant creative language that is visibly present across each of his portfolios of work that really encapsulates the movement of the world he see’s before him.

Within many photographic disciplines there’s sometimes a very formulaic way of doing things. Event coverage is one of those subject matters where it’s very easy to take the easy route and cover off the basics of the event, but its another to go beyond the surface and really examine the details of whats happening in front of you, on more of a macro level.

Earlier this year Theo got the chance to embed himself in amongst the 6 Nations Rugby tournament, providing some really eye-opening social coverage that took him to different corners of Europe documenting the sport. Theo’s way of seeing really hones in on the details of the manic situations he finds himself in, wether that be scoping out a mashed up cauliflower-ear of a player, to fans in fancy dress lining the streets; post-match, mid celebration/commiseration. Contrary to classic ‘sports coverage’ which may only freeze certain moments in time, he manages to tell a real story in an such a more energetic way that I feel captures the true feelings and energy of the event.

Sitting alongside this more dynamic work, Theo’s portraiture has a very quiet, honest feeling about it. There’s a continuous use of softer, more ambient light that seems to align all of his subjects despite all of their thematic differences and cultural backgrounds. Even with the varying photographic set-ups and colour tonalities, ultimately it’s the striking use of light he manages to control that unites them all.
